Hey MTHFR, stop drinking bottled water. Why, you may ask? The plastic that water is bottled in contains BPA (Bisphenol A), a toxic chemical that can cause a variety of health problems over time. Like other toxins, BPA is not good for anyone. However, a MTHFR who detoxes less efficiently than the average person has a more urgent need to discontinue consuming bottled water.
BPA acts as a synthetic xeno-oestrogen in the body, mimicking oestrogen. This can lead to hormonal imbalance, infertility in both men and women, fetal development abnormalities, and cancer, amongst a host of potential conditions. Once again, all people are at risk to develop BPA-related health problems. However, someone with the MTHFR mutation is extra vulnerable.
Thankfully, the solution is super simple. Purchase a reusable glass or stainless steel water bottle! Not only will you be doing your body a big favor, you'll also be helping the environment. Some other sources of BPA to be mindful of include plastic food storage containers and bags, as well as canned goods (the inside of cans are often coated with BPA - yet another reason to eat more whole, fresh foods).
