CBD oil. It's quite a buzzword these days, but there's also a lot of misconception surrounding it. What exactly is CBD oil? What does it do? Are there any precautions that should be taken? And how can it benefit someone with the MTHFR mutation? Read on to discover more...
CBD is short for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a chemical derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, better known as marijuana. However, this is where a lot of confusion creeps in - pure cannabidiol does not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the psychoactive component of marijuana that causes you to get "high." So basically, CBD oil gives you the health benefits of medical marijuana without the psychoactive component. Users have reported relief from a wide variety of symptoms, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, seizures, migraines, joint pain, and inflammation, just to name a few. While oil taken under the tongue or mixed with water is one of the most popular and effective forms that CBD is available in, there are many options on the market. You can take cannabidiol via edibles like gummies, lotion, capsules, and even injection. If you have your gallbladder removed, it's important to take it in one of these alternative forms, as your body won't be able to digest the oil properly.
So how exactly does this relate to a MTHFR? While CBD seems to cure many symptoms, it actually helps the body in three main ways, which leads to a wide variety of symptom resolution:
1) It decreases chronic inflammation
2) It decreases oxidative stress
3) It promotes neurotransmitter health
These just so happen to also be three ways that having the MTHFR mutation sabotages your body. Remember that list of symptoms that CBD can treat? They also are common symptoms amongst MTHFRs because of the way that having the mutation affects the body. Therefore, CBD can be a great ally.
If you're going to give CBD a shot, it's very important to make sure you find a reputable brand. I definitely don't recommend stopping at a random gas station to try it, unless you've done your research on the brand first. It's important to ensure that the CBD you're purchasing is pure, THC-free, and not contaminated with heavy metals and other harmful substances. I actually tried a sample this morning from SunMed, as part of a corporate wellness project my employer is testing out. I only received one sample but was told it typically takes about 5 days to notice a real difference. However, I definitely didn't have any negative side effects. I may have felt more relaxed and focused after my sample, but I was already in a calm and happy mood today, so it's hard to tell for sure. If I decide to purchase the product, I will be sure to do an update on how it's working for me.
