About: About

Hey MTHFR!  Thanks for stopping by.  Everyone carries the MTHFR gene that gives our bodies instructions to make an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR).  MTHFR converts folic acid into folate.  When you have an MTHFR gene variant, your body is unable to efficiently convert folic acid into a form of folate that your body can use.  This inefficiency leads to the disruption of a process called methylation, which then causes a cascade of problems and predisposes the carrier to various diseases and health conditions.  Roughly a quarter of the population carries at least one variant of the gene, while a smaller number carries two.  More serious health complications are associated with being homozygous (two copies), but adjustments should also be made to accommodate those who are heterozygous (one copy).

Having an MTHFR variant is connected to a wide variety of health problems, including cardiovascular distress, blood clotting disorders, neurological problems, the development of autoimmune disease, fertility struggles, food sensitivities, and more.  Many people discover that they have an MTHFR variant after experiencing some sort of serious health issue.  Thankfully, lifestyle changes can make all the difference.  Ever heard of epigenetics?  It means that we can change the expression of our genes for the better, without actually changing the DNA code.  Check out the blog to get started on your transformative journey.

To take a deeper, guided dive into how to thrive with an MTHFR variant, check out my online course called Hey MTHFR Academy.  It will help you to harness the exciting power of epigenetics in a way that is tailored to the MTHFR gene.  You will receive MTHFR-specific diet, supplementation, and lifestyle guidance, weekly reading content, quizzes, implementation challenges, printouts, and accountability tools.  Making the changes necessary to support health with an MTHFR variant can be overwhelming, but this program is designed to make learning simple and transformation natural.

I understand because I have been "in the trenches," myself.  Hey MTHFR and Hey MTHFR Academy were born through adversity.  I have experienced a myriad of health problems that ranged from inconvenient to life-threatening due to my poorly understood genetics.  Discovering that I'm homozygous for the MTHFR C677T variant, as well as what exactly that means, helped me to put the pieces of my health puzzle together and achieve effective, long-term change.  This all sparked my passion to help others experience holistic transformation as well, particularly those with an MTHFR variant.  From becoming an integrative health coach and eventually a holistic health practitioner to launching Hey MTHFR and Hey MTHFR Academy, I'm excited to help others heal holistically and optimize their genetics.

Let's harness the power of epigenetics, together!
