Hey MTHFR!  My name is Brooke Danielle and it's official - I'm homozygous for the C677T MTHFR mutation.  Apparently, I get it from my Mama because her test results are identical.

Everyone carries the MTHFR gene that gives our bodies instructions on making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR).  MTHFR converts folic acid into folate.  When you have an MTHFR gene variant, your body is unable to efficiently convert folic acid into a form of folate that your body can use.  This inefficiency leads to the disruption of a process called methylation, which then causes a buildup of toxicity and predisposes the carrier to various diseases and health conditions.

Somewhere around 30-50% of the population has at least one expression of the C677T or A1298C MTHFR gene mutation!  This is called being heterozygous.  While only 1.5-15% of the population carries two expressions of the gene variant (this is called being homozygous), it is still more common than many know.  While being heterozygous results in less severe health implications than being homozygous, all of us can benefit from a lifestyle that supports our genetics!

My health journey has been difficult to say the least, but I hope to use what I’ve learned to help others learn from my mistakes and have a smoother experience than I was able to have in my ignorance. My “mother-effer” gene has played a role in developing recurring life-threatening MRSA infections, an autoimmune thyroid disease, severe insomnia, and a host of annoying issues like food intolerances and eczema. I know that I’ll always be in somewhat of a battle against my genes, but serious lifestyle changes have brought me to a happier and healthier place than I could’ve dreamed of several years ago - and I want to take you all with me!

**Always check with your naturopathic doctor or functional physician before making any changes to your medication or supplements.  With that said, let's tackle this MTHFR!
